Combined: Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education and Candian Firearms Safety Courses

Duration: 24-26hrs. spanning 5 days 2 weekends) 

The goal of the CORE Program is to ensure that prospective hunters meet acceptable standards of knowledge and skill for safe and ethical participation in hunting recreation.

Candidate: BC Residents 10 years and older who wish to obtain a Fish and Wildlife Identification Number (FWID) in BC in order to qualify to purchase annual BC resident hunting licenses are required to complete the CORE Program.

COURSE TOPICS: Conservation, Ethics, Hunting Laws and Regulations, Survival, Animal and Bird Identification, Firearms and Ammunition training

TYPICAL COURSE ITINERARY:

  •     Sunday Afternoon 1:30pm to 7:30pm
  •     Monday Night at 6:00pm until 9:30pm

NOTE: Students must also have either successfully completed a Canadian Firearms Safety Course or attend Part II of the CORE course. in order to successfully complete CORE. Students are not require to obtain their PAL license in order to complete the CORE, but firearms and ammunition training is a mandatory component of the course.

Final Examination: Following the lessons, students will be expected to demonstrate his or her comprehension through a 75 question, multiple-choice exam followed by a practical firearms handling exam

Successful students will each submit a course report to the BCWF CORE program and in return receive a certificate that the student can then use to register a BC Fish and Wildlife ID number (FWID). Once registered with a FWID number, students can purchase annual hunting licenses and animal tags for legal hunting.

NOTE: Individuals who have completed a hunter education program from another state or province in North America are exempt from the requirement to complete the CORE Program. Contact the Government Agent at BC Access Centres for more details on program exemption.

BCWF CORE PROGRAM

Text books include the BC CORE Manual (can be purchased from an outfitter shop). The BC Hunting and Trapping Regulation Synopsis (can be downloaded from the BCWF website).


The goals of the CFSC & CRFSC Combined:

  1. to meet the mandatory requirements of section 7 of the Firearms Act and allow successful students to obtain a license to purchase and acquire unrestricted and unrestricted firearms and ammunition in Canada.
  2. to ensure that prospective un-restricted & restricted firearms users meet acceptable standards of knowledge and skill for safe and ethical participation in ownership and shooting sports.

Candidate: Canadian Residents who are 18 years of age or older and who wish to obtain a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for Unrestricted and restricted Firearms and ammunition in Canada. Youths as young as 12 years old are also qualified to participate in the course and examinations and may obtain a Junior PAL if desired.

COURSE TOPICS: History of Firearms, ammunition, action types, safe handling, legal storage and transport and Social responsibilities.

TYPICAL COURSE ITINERARY:

  •     Friday Night from 6:00pm to 9:30pm
  •     Saturday morning at 8:00am until 6:30pm with a .5hr lunch break
  •     Sunday Afternoon at 2:00pm to 6:00pm
  •     Monday Night from 6:00pm to 9:30pm

Final Examination: Following the lessons, students will be expected to demonstrate his or her comprehension through a 50 question, mulitple-choice exam followed by a practical firearms handling exam

Successful students will each submit a completed course report along with a photograph and a completed application form to the Canadian Firearms Program for background checks and licensing.  After approx. 2-3 months, students should receive their PAL in the mail. Once the students has his or her PAL, they are legally able to purchase unrestricted firearms and

More Information:

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) was developed in partnership with the provinces and territories, national organizations with an ongoing interest in firearms safety, and many firearms and hunter education course instructors from across Canada. This course was developed to meet the mandatory requirements of section 7 of the Firearms Act.

The legislation stipulates that individuals wishing to acquire non-restricted firearms must take the CFSC and pass the tests OR challenge and pass the CFSC tests without taking the course. Individuals wishing to acquire restricted firearms must take the CFSC and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) and pass the tests OR challenge and pass the tests without taking either course.


Please note: BIll C-42 has put into immediate effect that students may no longer challenge either of the Firearms Safety Courses.
